In many parts of India, menstrual hygiene is still shrouded in stigma, silence, and misinformation. Mrittika’s Shohochori project was born out of a strong belief—that every woman, no matter where she lives, deserves access to safe and dignified menstrual care.
Shohochori, meaning “a companion who walks beside you,” lives up to its name by reaching out to women in urban slums and rural villages, walking hand in hand with them to break taboos around menstruation and promote awareness on female hygiene.

Through this project, Mrittika distributes free sanitary napkins to women and adolescent girls who often have no access to affordable or safe menstrual products. But Shohochori goes beyond distribution. Our volunteers conduct awareness sessions that cover essential topics like menstrual hygiene management, proper disposal methods, reproductive health, and debunking common myths and superstitions surrounding periods.
We speak to women in their own language, in their own comfort zones—sometimes in a small courtyard, sometimes under a tree. These open conversations have empowered many women to make healthier choices and encourage the next generation to do the same.

Shohochori has also helped create safe spaces where girls can ask questions without fear, and women can support each other without shame. In doing so, we’re not just promoting hygiene—we’re fostering dignity, confidence, and sisterhood.
By combining product access with education, Shohochori is changing the way communities view menstruation—from a source of silence to a topic of strength.
Join us in this mission. Let’s walk together and make hygiene and dignity a right, not a privilege, for every woman.
